Preventing HIV and STIs: Clinical Strategies with PEP, PrEP, and DoxyPEP

OVERVIEW

This course aims to enhance healthcare professionals' knowledge and skills in implementing biomedical prevention strategies for HIV and sexually transmitted infections (STIs), focusing on Post-Exposure Prophylaxis (PEP), Pre-Exposure Prophylaxis (PrEP), and Doxycycline Post-Exposure Prophylaxis (DoxyPEP). Participants will explore clinical guidelines, patient assessment, prescribing practices, counseling techniques, and emerging evidence on efficacy and safety. Emphasis is placed on evidence-based implementation, patient-centered care, and interprofessional collaboration to improve health outcomes and equity, particularly within the District of Columbia.

Target Audience

This course is designed for physicians, physician assistants, nurse practitioners, registered nurses, social workers, pharmacists, dentists, and medical students and residents.

Learning Objectives

  1. Describe the mechanisms of action, efficacy, and clinical guidelines for prescribing PEP, PrEP, and DoxyPEP for the prevention of HIV and bacterial STIs.​
  2. Identify patients eligible for each biomedical prevention strategy using risk assessment tools, behavioral history, and clinical screening protocols.​
  3. Initiate and manage PEP, PrEP, and DoxyPEP regimens, including baseline and follow-up laboratory monitoring, adherence support, and management of side effects or complications.​
  4. Deliver informed, culturally responsive counseling that addresses stigma, health literacy, and social determinants of health to support patient-centered decision-making.​
  5. Collaborate as a team, inclusive of nurses, physicians, pharmacists, sexual health specialists, and community-based providers to deliver coordinated, integrated biomedical prevention services.​

 Rachel Harold, MD 

Bio: Dr. Rachel Harold, MD is a board-certified infectious disease and internal medicine physician and a Certified Public Health professional, with extensive experience in HIV, STI, and public health program implementation. She currently serves as Supervisory Medical Officer and Attending Physician at the DC Health and Wellness Center within the District of Columbia Department of Health, where she leads and contributes to multiple citywide initiatives in the HIV/AIDS, Hepatitis, STD, and Tuberculosis Administration.

 Jason Beverley, RN, MSN, FNP-BC 

Bio: Jason Beverley is a Certified Family Nurse Practitioner who serves as Chief of the STD and TB Control Division, part of the 
HIV/AIDS, Hepatitis, STD, and TB Administration (HAHSTA) at DC Department of Health. Prior to his work at DC 
Health, Jason worked extensively with vulnerable youth in Washington, DC, including work at a school-based 
health center providing adolescent primary care and on the MedStar Georgetown University Hospital Kids Mobile 
Medical Clinic, a free pediatric primary care clinic serving low resource areas of DC. Prior to that, he spent 10 years 
as an RN at Children’s National Medical Center in the pediatric ICU. He received both his BSN and MSN from 
Georgetown University.
