Biography
Marco Mercader is Director of Arrhythmia Research for the Division of Cardiology at The George Washington University School of Medicine and Health Sciences and Program Director for the Electrophysiology Fellowship. Dr. Mercader is now a Professor for the Department of Medicine, Division of Cardiology. He is actively involved in research, education, and community services for the GW Heart and Vascular Institute. He is board-certified in cardiology and cardiac electrophysiology. Dr. Mercader is an elected Fellow of the American College of Cardiology. He graduated magna cum laude from the Biomedical Engineering program at Syracuse University in the top 5% of his class. He went to the State University of New York for his medical school training where he received the distinguished American Federation for Clinical Research Award. He has completed his internship, residency, cardiology, and electrophysiology fellowships at George Washington University. His research focus involves developing new treatment strategies for the most common cardiac rhythm disorder: atrial fibrillation. His research findings have been presented at national and international conferences, including the American Heart Association, American College of Cardiology, Heart Rhythm Society, and Cardiostim. He has written numerous abstracts, peer-reviewed papers, and books in the field of cardiology. As part of his community service, Dr. Mercader has participated in and raised funds annually for a medical mission to a remote area in Comayagua, Honduras. The medical brigade provides a free, two-week heart clinic to the Honduras patients identifying and treating patients in need of heart pacemakers and implantable cardiac defibrillators. The group implants more heart devices during the two-week period than are implanted during the entire rest of the year throughout Honduras. Dr. Mercader is responsible for teaching medical students, residents, and cardiology fellows in a complex and fascinating field. Dr. Mercader is the Director of the Clinical Cardiology and Electrocardiogram electives for the GW School of Medicine. He is an outstanding medical educator. He has been frequently nominated for the teacher of the year award and his elective has been recognized as one of the top five electives of the medical school. Dr. Mercader has given lectures to many of the GW students, residents, and fellows of the university. He has also given lectures at national and international meetings. He mentors cardiology fellows and helps them improve their skills in the diagnosis and treatment of cardiac arrhythmias, pacemaker/defibrillator placements and follow up, as well as electrophysiology studies and catheter ablations. Dr. Mercader is also an inventor and currently has six patent applications with his research collaborators. He is the first-named inventor of a recently awarded patent by the US Patent and Trademark Office on “Systems and Methods for Visualizing Ablated Tissue”. Dr. Mercader is Co-Director of the 7th Annual Cardiovascular Symposium. Dr. Mercader has received many accolades including being selected to Washingtonian Top Doctors in 2019-24, US News and World report top 10% doctors, most compassionate doctors in the DC area, Castle Connolly Top Doctors, and others. He is proud to be a physician, teacher, researcher, and inventor at a large academic institution in the USA.
