Management of Asthma

OVERVIEW

This 1.5-credit asynchronous course provides a practical, evidence-based update on asthma management for providers in family medicine and emergency medicine. Drawing on the GINA 2025 guidelines, the course covers best practices in pharmacologic treatment, including SMART therapy, and addresses asthma care across pediatric and adult populations.

The course also focuses on primary and secondary prevention strategies, such as mitigating environmental triggers (including housing and environmental factors that exacerbate asthma), smoking cessation, and promotion of asthma action plans. Learners will also gain skills in demonstrating proper inhaler techniques, optimizing office visits, and integrating social determinants of health and inequities of care into clinical decision-making.

Special attention is paid to interprofessional team-based care, empowering physicians, pharmacists, nurses, medical assistants, school nurses, respiratory therapists, and other stakeholders to manage asthma collaboratively. The course incorporates case-based learning to improve clinical decision-making and highlights patient rights in workplace, housing, and school environments, as relevant to the target audience.

Target Audience

This course is designed for family medicine physicians, emergency medicine physicians, pediatricians, nurse practitioners, physician assistants, pharmacists, nurses, respiratory therapists, and other healthcare professionals managing patients with asthma.

Learning Objectives

By the end of this course, the learner will be able to:

  1. Identify patients at risk of poor outcomes with emphasis on social determinants of health, and implement strategies to support equitable access to medications.
  2. Understand the role of non-pharmacological strategies including allergen mitigation, inhaler technique training, allergen immunotherapy, and management of co-morbidities.
  3. Implement the GINA 2025 stepwise treatment guidelines with an emphasis on anti-inflammatory reliever therapies.
  4. Facilitate interprofessional teams—including physicians, nurses, pharmacists, and respiratory therapists—to deliver coordinated asthma care.
